Mesothelioma: Signs and Symptoms
It may up to 20-50 years after asbestos exposure that mesothelioma symptoms may appear. Individuals with symptoms of pleura mesothelioma experience shortness of breath, cough, and chest pain from an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space.
In addition, individuals with peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms can experience weight loss and cachexia, abdominal swelling and pain due to ascites (a buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity). Also, they may experience bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever. If the individuals have cancer spreading beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, theyl may have symptoms which include pain, trouble swallowing, or neck or face swelling. All these symptoms may be caused by mesothelioma or by other, less serious conditions.
When mesothelioma affects the pleura, these are the signs and symptoms caused:
shortness of breath, pleural effusion, or fluid surrounding the lung, chest wall pain, fatigue or anemia, blood in the sputum (fluid) coughed up and wheezing, hoarseness, or cough.
For individuals who may have a multitude of tumor masses, these are considered very severe cases. Lung collapse or pneumothorax is what may be developed by the individual. When the disease spreads to other various parts of the body, the disease may metastasize.
When individuals have tumors that affect the abdominal cavity, they often do not experience symptoms until they are at a late stage. These symptoms include: weight loss, bowel function problems, a mass in the abdomen, abdominal pain, ascites, or an abnormal buildup of abdomen fluid.
For individuals with severe cases of the disease, they can experience the following signs and symptoms such as: low blood sugar level, pleural effusion; blood clots in the veins, which may cause thrombophlebitis; disseminated intravascular coagulation, which is a disorder that causes severe bleeding in many body organs; jaundice, which is eye and skin yellowing; pulmonary emboli, or blood clots in the arteries of the lungs and severe ascites.
Individuals with mesothelioma usually will not experience the disease spreading to the bone, brain, or adrenal glands. In addition with pleural tumors, they are usually found only on one side of the lungs.
